This smart leak sensor placement guide helps you put detection where it has the best chance of catching trouble early - before a small drip becomes an expensive repair.

A smart leak sensor is most effective when it sits at the lowest practical point near a water source, where water will naturally collect first. Pairing those sensors with an automatic shutoff system adds a stronger layer of protection: the sensor identifies water, the system alerts you, and a connected valve can stop the supply before damage keeps spreading.

Start With the Areas Most Likely to Leak

Not every room needs a sensor on day one. Start with appliances, fixtures, and plumbing connections that combine frequent use with hidden water lines. These are the places where a slow leak can remain unnoticed for days.

Prioritize these high-risk locations:

  • Under kitchen and bathroom sinks
  • Behind washing machines and dishwashers
  • Beside water heaters, boilers, and HVAC condensate drains
  • Near refrigerators with ice makers or water dispensers
  • At basement plumbing manifolds, sump pumps, and utility sinks
  • Under toilets or near tubs and shower access panels
If you own a second home or travel often, coverage in utility areas becomes even more valuable. A leak that happens at 2 a.m. is one problem. A leak that runs for a week while the house is empty is another.

Place the sensor directly on the floor or inside the lowest part of a cabinet, close to - but not directly under - the most likely leak point. For example, under a sink, position it near the rear of the cabinet where supply valves and drain connections are located. This keeps the sensor close to the source while protecting it from being bumped by stored cleaning products.

Water does not always drip straight down. It can run along pipes, cabinet walls, appliance feet, or flooring seams before pooling. Look for the spot where it would settle. In a laundry room, that may be behind the washer near the hose connections. In a mechanical room, it may be at the base of the water heater rather than beside the unit.

Avoid placing a sensor on a shelf, on top of insulation, or in a spot where a small amount of water could bypass it. The goal is simple: give water the shortest possible path to the sensor contacts.

Under Sinks: Cover Supply Lines and Drain Connections

Under-sink cabinets are among the best sensor locations in any home. Flexible supply hoses, shutoff valves, garbage disposal connections, dishwasher hoses, and drain traps can all leak. A compact sensor placed on the cabinet floor near the back wall can detect water before it soaks into the cabinet base or leaks through to the room below.

In wide kitchen cabinets with several connections, one sensor may not be enough. If the cabinet has a divider or the dishwasher connection sits beyond the sensor's reach, use a second unit. Placement should reflect the cabinet layout, not a one-sensor-per-room rule.

Washing Machines: Protect the Hoses First

Washing machine supply hoses are a common source of sudden water damage because they remain pressurized when the machine is not running. Place a sensor behind or beside the washer, as close as practical to the hot and cold water connections.

Make sure the sensor will not be crushed or moved when the appliance vibrates. If access behind the washer is difficult, place it on the floor just outside the appliance footprint where water would emerge. A connected automatic shutoff valve is especially useful here because it can respond even when nobody is home to close the manual valve.

Water Heaters: Watch the Base and Relief Valve Area

Water heaters can fail slowly through corrosion or suddenly through a tank rupture. Put a leak sensor on the floor at the base of the tank, near the drain valve and temperature-pressure relief discharge area. If the heater sits in a drain pan, position the sensor where it can detect collected water without interfering with the pan or drain.

For tankless units, check beneath the unit and around nearby valves and fittings. Condensation, pressure-relief discharge, and connection leaks may collect below the system even when the unit itself is mounted on a wall.

Do Not Forget Appliances That Use Water Quietly

Dishwashers, refrigerators, and HVAC systems can leak with very little warning. They are also easy to overlook because their connections are hidden.

For a dishwasher, place the sensor in the adjacent sink cabinet near the dishwasher supply and drain connections when there is no safe space underneath the appliance. For a refrigerator, place it behind the unit near the water line, but leave enough clearance to prevent the sensor from being damaged when the refrigerator is moved. Near an HVAC system, focus on the condensate pan, drain line, and pump. A clogged condensate line can create a surprising amount of water over time.

These locations may require a little planning during setup. That extra effort is worthwhile because hidden appliances often cause damage before a homeowner notices a visible puddle.

Bathrooms Need Thoughtful Placement

Bathrooms create moisture every day, so sensor placement must distinguish between normal splashes and actual leaks. Do not place a sensor in the open where routine shower spray, wet towels, or a child's bath can trigger frequent alerts.

Instead, place sensors beneath vanity cabinets, behind toilets, or inside accessible plumbing panels. Behind a toilet, position the sensor near the supply valve or base, where a failed connection or wax ring leak may reach the floor. In upstairs bathrooms, early detection matters even more because water can damage the ceiling and structure below.

A sensor near a tub or shower is most useful when it can sit behind an access panel or near exposed plumbing. If there is no protected location, focus on the vanity and toilet first, then inspect caulking, grout, and shower doors regularly for surface-water issues a floor sensor may not detect.

Consider Your Whole-Home Shutoff Strategy

Individual sensors tell you where water is appearing. A smart water valve or flow-monitoring shutoff device protects the larger picture by responding to abnormal water activity throughout the home. Together, they create a more complete defense: point-of-leak detection for known risk areas and automatic supply control for unexpected events.
